Butterfly-weed and Black-eyed Susans are blooming along many of the local roads. Some sumac seedheads are starting to turn from green to red. The Better Half and I are noting potential locations for Autumn foraging and/or seed collecting.

As I write this, I'm watching a handful of sparrows explore the freshly mowed grass patches and our two dogs explore corners of the screened patio, probably for the same reasons the sparrows are exploring the grass awhile grosbeaks, goldfinches and cardinals are at the feeders. All in all, it's the time in Summer that brings to mind a very moving song from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. I wonder what George would have thought of Janis' rendition. Years ago I saw her in concert at Harvard Stadium on a Summer's evening. Memorable, enjoyable, unforgettable. I hope this holiday weekend becomes the same for you, for all good reasons.

Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high

Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky

But till that morning
There's a'nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by

Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high

Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry
