Mid-Summer palette #phenology

It's Friday, July 13th. Significant if you suffer from or believe in Triskaidekaphobia. We recall having learned somewhere or other that hotels don't have a 13th floor. For those not particularly superstitious, we're going to reach the Ides of July in a few days. Since it's not March, and we're not Julius Caesar, we'll try to not let that worry us either and focus on the idea that mid July is also approximately mid Summer. A Mid Summer Night's Dream may be something we all could use, or are we currently living something too much like it?

Mid-July is time to look for an increase in purples, violets, lavenders, lilacs, iris, amethyst and/or orchids and, maybe, periwinkle. Your color palette may vary but we're thinking of the proliferation of purple cone flowers, thistles (Canada and bull), and crown vetch among other purple plants. Oh, and don't forget, July brings more purple later in the month when the Vikings training camp opens.

Mid-July is also time to look for youngsters born back in the days of Spring to join parents in learning the neighborhood. Goslings, sandhill crane colts and whitetail fawns become noticeable as we enter the doldrums and dog days of Summer. Next week might be a more enjoyable time to watch for them if the weather does indeed cool down and dry out from what we've "enjoyed" this week. Let's hope the trajectory of intense rain storms has finally arked for this season. (See what we did there?)

Lullaby

Purple,
Purple,
Twilight
Sky light.

Purple as a king’s cape
Purple as a grape.

Purple for the evening
When daylight is leaving.

Soft and purry,
Gentle and furry,
Velvet evening-time.

Purple,
Purple.
Sky light
Goodbye light.

Dusky
Musky
Into night.
