Which side are you on?

Today's sky has a November look to it, cloudy and hinting at the snow we might get late this week. I think it would be wonderful if the weather starts to take a turn toward "normal." I wouldn't even complain if the climate did that too. Either would help reinforce my current commitment to reinstate a modicum of what laughingly passes for normalcy in my life.

Have you ever noticed that whoever gets to write the rules of the game often wins? Those who spend most of their energy and other resources reacting, instead of taking the initiative, aren't very often successful. To use a clichéd sports saying, "the best defense is a good offense." I mention this because I see a frightening amount of defensiveness in the reactions of many to the actions of the president-elect. (He who must not be named?). I want to scream "Stop it!" I'm tired of hearing what folks are against. I want to know what you're for! If love Trumps hate, tell us who and what you love. Be specific.

Recent events have reminded me of the magnificent duet between Ani DiFranco and Utah Phillips singing "Which Side Are You On." That, in turn, reminded me of the absolute best grin I've seen in my entire life. Since I think we all need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and start all over again, I'm sharing that grin with you here and now.

Which Side Are You On?

A Song by Florence Patton Reece (follow the link, scroll down and read the notes)

Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how that good old union
Has come in here to dwell

Chorus
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a miner
And I'm a miner's son
And I'll stick with the union
Till every battle's won

They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for J.H. Blair

Oh, workers can you stand it?
Oh, tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?

Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Us poor folks haven't got a chance
Unless we organize
