Welcome, March! #phenology

Snow banks are melting. Puddles are growing. Snowmobile trails are flooding in the marshes. River ice in Carlos Avery is turning pewter, but no open water leads yet. Meteorological Spring has arrived! And, the weather is in agreement. Right now the temperature is in the mid-40's.

While walking SiSi, one of our dogs, after lunch, we discovered fresh hoof prints in the shoulder of the road. A neighbor has been riding his or her horse, possibly for the first time this year. If the forecast holds, I won't be surprised to see some open water within a week or ten days. Red-wing blackbirds, geese and swans should arrive by mid-month, and maybe, just maybe, day-lilies could be emerging by month's end. Or, we could end up with a couple of feet of fresh snow falling between now and Easter. Spring in the North Country is always one exciting surprise after another. For now, we can be sure that the warm days and freezing nights should produce a good maple sap run in the  local sugarbush. March  is maple syrup time!

Dear March - Come in - (1320)

Emily Dickinson - 1830-1886

Dear March - Come in -
How glad I am -
I hoped for you before -
Put down your Hat -
You must have walked -
How out of Breath you are -
Dear March, how are you, and the Rest -
Did you leave Nature well -
Oh March, Come right upstairs with me -
I have so much to tell -

I got your Letter, and the Birds -
The Maples never knew that you were coming -
I declare - how Red their Faces grew -
But March, forgive me -
And all those Hills you left for me to Hue -
There was no Purple suitable -
You took it all with you -

Who knocks? That April -
Lock the Door -
I will not be pursued -
He stayed away a Year to call
When I am occupied -
But trifles look so trivial
As soon as you have come

That blame is just as dear as Praise
And Praise as mere as Blame -
