Opportunities for You. Make a Difference!

Hi. Thanks for stopping by. I think I've mentioned before that I have the honor and the privilege to serve as president of the Northwoods Humane Society. I've been at it  for about a year now. We have a couple of events coming up that I think you might enjoy. They could also use some additional volunteer support if you're so inclined.

To volunteer, please contact

Instructions to purchase tickets for the High Tea are on the flyer . To check out the garage sale, please just show up during the dates and hours noted at the location on that flyer.

Do you know sulfide mines are being proposed for the first time in Minnesota?  Different from our traditional iron mines, sulfide mines that would likely create water pollution in the form of sulfuric acid and toxic metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic, are proposed near the Boundary Waters and Lake Superior.  No sulfide mine in the United States or any other country has ever been successfully operated and closed without polluting nearby waters. That's why I recently signed a petition to Governor Mark Dayton.
Governor Dayton, asking these 4 simple questions can help protect our state's lakes and rivers and wild rice heritage [check the Protect Our Manoomin link on the right]. Before saying yes to new sulfide mines, please make sure the mining companies and state agencies can answer these four simple questions with an unequivocal "yes":

Will Minnesota's water stay safe and clean?
Are there strong safeguards in place for when things go wrong?
Will the company leave the site clean and maintenance-free?
Will Minnesota's taxpayers be protected from cleanup costs?

Thanks! Come again when you can. Rants, raves and reflections served here daily (along with occasional Action Items).
