#WorldKindnessDay gone to the dogs

As is clear from many of our postings, we live in the country. Today's posting will be very abbreviated because we have just encountered a dilemma in the form of a friendly black and white spaniel wandering around for the past several hours and approaching the house. S/he (we haven't looked closely yet) is now sitting in our dog run. We've contacted the neighborhood group on-line and the town clerk. We can take the dog to the local humane society but...

What's the better kindness approach? Let the dog wander in hopes s/he will find his/her way home or the owner will come looking? Turn the dog over to the humane society, not knowing if the owner will ever come by or check the society's facilities? Is there a standard protocol for this of situation? We just took a drive around the area and saw no one looking for a dog and no lost dog posters. The we gave him/her some food. We'll let you know how it turns out once, one way or another, we've brought closure to the visit .

Hunger

If we never have enough love, we have more than most.
We have lost dogs in our neighborhood and wild coyotes,
and sometimes we can’t tell them apart. Sometimes
we don’t want to. Once I brought home a coyote and told
my lover we had a new pet. Until it ate our chickens.
Until it ate our chickens, our ducks, and our cat. Sometimes
we make mistakes and call them coincidences. We hold open
the door then wonder how the stranger ended up in our home.
There is a woman on our block who thinks she is feeding bunnies,
but they are large rats without tails. Remember the farmer’s wife?
Remember the carving knife? We are all trying to change
what we fear into something beautiful. But even rats need to eat.
Even rats and coyotes and the bones on the trail could be the bones
on our plates. I ordered Cornish hen. I ordered duck. Sometimes
love hurts. Sometimes the lost dog doesn’t want to be found.

Thanks for visiting. Come again when you can.
Please be kind to each other while you can.
