We took advantage of today’s rain to run some errands. We are now ready to take on the oil changes in the tractor, lawn mower and snow blower. Later this evening we’ll change the furnace filter. This afternoon, between rain showers, we replaced a brake light and flasher lens on the tractor. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the region, graupel was falling.

Temperatures drop during the rest of the week and we’re expecting a couple of nights in a row with below freezing temperatures. That will probably end any flowering for the season. On the other hand, today the Better Half announced she had discovered a tick on herself. I replied that ticks are known to be active any time the temperature is over 40℉. At least we haven’t had to cope with deer flies or mosquitos for weeks.
Leaf colors continue to develop, even the oaks are joining the party. Wet leaves look more colorful, probably due to the light reflecting off the moisture on the leaves. Any guesses on whether we’ll get through October without experiencing that famous four letter word?
Although we’ve lived in our house for about 25 years, we’ve yet to have our first trick or treater. This year may be different because a family with young children moved in down the road. We’ll see what happens but, to be on the safe side, I did pick up a bag of treats while out erranding today, that way, if no one shows, I can be sure the leftovers are what I also enjoy.
That’s it for now. Autumn is settling in and we’re trying to slow our pace to match the seasonal changes. They don’t happen quickly, but each day we can feel a little closer to the season of cold and snow and ice. Some, like today’s poet, relish that. Others, like me, barely tolerate it.
Fall, leaves, fall
By Emily Brontë
Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;Lengthen night and shorten day;Every leaf speaks bliss to meFluttering from the autumn tree.I shall smile when wreaths of snowBlossom where the rose should grow;I shall sing when night’s decayUshers in a drearier day.
