Starting National Poetry Month on April 1 is not a joke!

Mother Nature has a twisted sense of humor. Early this morning the local temperature dropped to 16℉. That must have been her idea of an April Fool's joke, since today's normal low is 31℉, although, in fairness, the record low is 9℉. In an interesting reversal of a typical Spring-time patterns, the smaller ponds and puddles are skimming over with ice cover at night, while the larger lakes are remaining ice free.

The Academy of American Poets is the producer of National Poetry Month. We've been a member of the Academy for a number of years. (Full disclosure: we're frequently better at reading poetry than we are at writing poems.) Some time ago, after we retired and became a recovering planner, we developed the practice of reading several poems every morning with our coffee. These days we're thoroughly enjoying Naomi Shihab Nye's Everything Comes Next; Jim Harrison's Dead Man's Float; and, A Year With Rumi, Coleman Barks' translation.
